About our new Vicar, Revd. John Hayward
John
Hayward is the new Vicar of St Mary’s. He was the unanimous
choice of the interview panel, which comprised Richard Cheetham (the
Bishop of Kingston), Chris Skilton (the Archdeacon of Lambeth), and the
two parish representatives appointed by the Parochial Church Council,
Anne Carroll and Grenville Williams.

Merton, 22 April 2008 (pic: David Reeves). |
John
joined St Mary's in April 2008 after being the Vicar of St
Martin’s, Gospel Oak in North London for 12 years. For just over two
years, he combined this post with that of Area Dean of South
Camden. He started
his working life in the hospitality industry, including periods of time
in hotel management. He underwent theological training at Lincoln
Theological College and was ordained in 1990. He served as an Assistant
Curate in Seaford, East Sussex and subsequently in Kings Cross,
combining the latter post with that of Team Coordinator of a Mental
Health Centre Trust based at his parish. He then moved to St Martin’s.
John is 44 years old, single, and among his spare time pursuits are “comedy:
impersonation and sketch writing”. (Whether the interview panel members
provided him with a rich source of material we may learn in due course.)
