Bellringers ring a peal for Nelson
The ringers are very pleased to report that, on Saturday 1st
October 2005, a peal was rung at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Merton
Park by members of the Surrey Association of Church Bell Ringers, including
two members of the local band.
It consisted of 5040 changes of Surfleet, Beverley and Cambridge Surprise
Minor, and took 2 hours and 36 minutes.
Peal ringing (a bit like running a marathon) is often for special occasions,
and required a very high level of concentration and high quality striking,
and we are very pleased to have been successful. This was the first peal on
the bells since 1986, and was rung as part of the celebration and
commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the battle of
Trafalgar. The 4th bell dates from Nelson’s time in 1803.
