The observant amongst you may have
noticed that the painting in the Bell tower has disappeared. To bring you
all up to date, this is what is happening. The Painting, ‘Christ on the Way
to Calvary’, artist unknown , was given to us in mid-Victorian times. It is
at present at a Fine Art Conservation Studio in London.
The detailed report from
there states that, basically, it is in very poor condition and does not
recommend restoration. (Some years ago we were told that this could cost in
the region of £20,000). A valuer from Sotheby’s has been to assess it and
says that we could possibly get £5,000-£8,000 at auction.
Recently, an ex-Churchwarden (not
of this parish ), who would like it for his own home, has made us an offer
of around £7,000. By a large majority, the PCC favours, under the
circumstances, taking up this offer.
The painting is at the Studio
until we hear from the diocese on whether the transaction can proceed or
not. We have had notices up for the last month in case of opposition, as
required by the diocese, and also PCC Minutes are always placed in the Bell
tower for people to read.
The painting has no historical value to the church, annual insurance is not
insignificant and the PCC thinks that we can make better use of our
resources.
