Dear Parishioners of St Mary's Merton,
I have been in discussions with Alan Morris, and I felt I
should write a letter to you all, via the magazine, to thank those of
you who have made donations towards Kenya 2008 project.
As some of you already know, these projects have been
taking place on a three year cycle since 1990. They form apart of the
Explorer Scouts ‘Queen's Scout Award’.
Everybody who goes on these projects, whether it be
leader or young person, has to pay their own air fare, and for a few
days R & R in a hotel before coming home, so ALL contributions and
fundraising money goes on the project.
One of our major fundraising events is a Christmas Day
swim at Brighton, at 8.00am in fancy dress, and this fundraising has
been going on for the last 18 years.
All of these projects are beneficial in three ways:
-
As already said, it is part of their ‘Queen's Scout
Award’
-
It gives young people an opportunity to live, work and
play with people of another culture
-
The community in this remote Kenyan site now have a fully
running clinic with a Doctor and Nurse, this saves them hours of walking
to the nearest town for the hospital and so helps save lives, both
children and adults alike.
In conclusion, I feel I must say that we hear so much bad
news these days about young people getting up to no good, but rarely do
you hear about young people getting involved with other people half way
round the world who are much less fortunate than themselves.
The Explorers shall be doing a short presentation at a church service in
the New Year.
Should anybody require further information or a prospectus my details
are on the back page of the church magazine.
