Iona PilgrimageThis is your last chance to sign up for the proposed pilgrimage to Iona.  Details were in last month’s magazine.  The deadline for signing the list in the porch is the 15th August.

Alterations in Services

Our pattern of worship in August changes slightly from the rest of the year.  As many of you know the choir has a rest from their duties at St Mary’s.  This means that Evensong is said with hymns and a short sermon.  We wish the choir well in its choral residence at Chichester Cathedral.  There will also be no weekday Matins and no Eucharist on Tuesday mornings at 9-00am except on St Bartholomew’s day.  Please see diary for details.

 John Innes Centenary
This takes place on Sunday 8th August.  Our normal pattern of worship is altered on this Sunday.  There will be a Eucharist with hymns at 8-30am followed by Choral Matins and sermon at 10-00am.  This service will be commemorating the centenary of the death of John Innes. Although we are holding an earlier service, I hope many of our regular congregation will join with others in the community and guests at this service.  John Innes was for many years a churchwarden at St Mary’s.

Gift Day
On Sunday July 11th I preached a sermon on the parable of the ‘Good Samaritan’. In it I said, that this particular story of the Good Samaritan, under girded much of the Christian understanding of our responsibility to our neighbours.  In our global economy our neighbours now can be in any part of the world.  St Mary’s has a generous tradition of giving money to those who are poor in the world.  Perhaps our vocation is ‘to love and to give’.  On September 12th therefore we are holding a gift day for people to give money towards our target of £5000 for outward giving in 2004.  This is in the context of our Patronal festival and also in the absence of a summer fair this year.  I do hope that you will seize this opportunity to give to our ‘Outward Giving’ fund.  Details of the recipients of this money will be given in next month’s magazine.

Talking Points
Click here for full details about this event.  It will only be a success if each of us invites our friends and neighbours to all or some of these evenings. This is a straightforward opportunity for us to witness to our faith.  Please remember this event in your prayers.
