2005 is the
Bicentenary of Nelson's Death after the Battle of Trafalgar. It has
also been designated the 'Year of the Sea'.
More
information of plans on a national scale is available at
www.seabritain2005.com and the website of the
National Maritime Museum
at Greenwich.
At
St Mary's we would also like to celebrate Nelson's connection to our Church
and so will be planning some activities. Currently some of the ideas that we
are considering include a 'Nelson and Merton' calendar, possibly a Ball in
the same terms as the Millennium Ball, a visit to Buckler's Hard in
Brockenhurst, a concert built around the theme of the sea, a lecture on
Nelson's local connections and a Flower Festival.
Merton Council is also working hard to celebrate Nelson and the Year of the
Sea, including a service at St Mary's Church, and a Victory Parade on
Trafalgar Day. Local schools will be performing play in the
Wimbledon theatre.
At
the moment Lorna Cowell and Krysia Williams are co-ordinating the local
activities that St Mary's Congregation may provide. All our ideas will not
necessarily come to fruition, but nothing will really happen without the
help of others. We are hoping that people will feel that they have enough
enthusiasm to make one of these ideas a reality. If you feel you can
organise one event…or help others, please contact
Krysia Williams or
Lorna Cowell.
