Panto time
by Chris Abbot

It’s that time of year again (oh yes it is… oh no it isn’t…) and the Parish Players are busy rehearsing Jack and the Beanstalk. This will be the first production for around ten years to take on the challenges of providing a giant, a beanstalk and a cow (among other characters) on the Church Hall stage. And that stage should be looking good this year, since we hope the new curtains will be in place, provided by the Parish Players after a fund-raising drive during the last year. Directed by Chris Abbott and produced by Parish Players new Chair, Geoff Start, the production runs for 3  evenings and one Saturday matinee from the 8th to 10th January. The cast features a mix of familiar faces and newcomers.

Jack and the Beanstalk is one of the most popular pantomimes, and this will be a very traditional production. The story is probably German in origin, although there is also a similar Cornish folk-tale. The first panto version of the story was in 1819 and included the very first female Principal Boy in any pantomime (and we will be continuing that tradition of course). Daisy the Cow caused us a few problems; it’s easy hiring a cow costume in August, but they tend to be quite booked up in December and January. However, we not only found one, we bought it!

As the panto falls this year during a school week, there will be no Friday matinee. As usual, the proceeds of the Saturday matinee will be given to the NSPCC. With one less performance, tickets will be selling fast.
Ticket line: Michelle Payne 020-8542 9884.
