Tree work
in the churchyard

Ian Aldridge reports

This month's Magazine Homepage

The PCC has for some time been concerned about the trees in the churchyard, particularly the effect some have had on reducing the views of the church building from Church Path, safety issues and general tree care. This problem is now being tackled, and during February/ March it is planned that once we have obtained the proper authority some important tree work will be carried out.

Most of the trees in the churchyard are subject to a tree protection order, which means that local council consent is needed in certain circumstances before work can start (you may have seen the public notice displayed during November). That consent has been granted. In addition authority is also required from the Diocese of Southwark (by way of a Faculty), and although our application has been submitted there could be a delay in receiving the final decision whilst an objection to the proposed work is considered.

If all goes well with our application to the Diocese the tree surgeon can start work on an important first step in the gradual improvement to the appearance of the churchyard,k care of the trees and views of the church.
