Bells have been ringing in
St Mary's bell tower for
around 600 years |
|

|
The oldest of our bells dates
from 1450 and is the fifth bell in the
present ring of six |
 |
The largest (the tenor or
sixth bell at 7cwt) is
inscribed ‘Bryan Eldridge
made me 1621’ |
 |
The fourth bell was
installed in 1803 during
the time when Lord
Nelson lived in the parish |
 |
The second and third bells were
installed at the time of Queen
Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and the smaller
(the treble or first bell at about 3cwt)
was installed with a new steel
frame in 1970 |
 |
Bell ringing is a very old tradition,
but is now in danger of dying out
at St Mary's
|
 |
Ringers meet to practice on Monday
evenings at 7.45pm
|
 |
The bells are rung on Sundays prior to
the morning and evening services
(9.30am and 6.30 pm) |
 |
Ringers can start to learn from 8 years
of age, height is not a problem,
and there is no upper age limit!
