PCC Notes November 2007

The PCC last met on 19th November and the following points were raised:

  • The Reverend John Hayward had been appointed as the new incumbent and will take up the position after Easter 2008 at a date to be chosen by the Bishop of Southwark to fit in with his schedule. John has been Vicar of St Martin’s with St Andrews, Gospel Oak, N5, for twelve years. He is aged 44, single and a priest of wide experience, much of which is very relevant to St Mary’s. He is musical, he has been engaged in youth work and is a governor of a community youth club.

  • Thanks were given to those who were involved in the informal parish visits and to Grenville Williams and Anne Carroll for their work as Parish Representatives on the appointments panel. The Area Dean will continue to support the Church Wardens particularly in ensuring that we have a priest who can cover the whole of Easter Week.

  • St Mary’s is supporting a project run by the local Explorer Scouts to improve basic facilitates at a medical clinic in Kenya. The scouts will be making a presentation about this work to the congregation on Sunday 17 February at the 9.30 service. People would be invited to contribute to a retiring collection.

  • The PCC were given an update on the money raised from autumn events for Outward Giving. The Barn Dance made £250 and the Sponsored Walk raised £2,000, from which tax relief can be claimed. At the time of the meeting the Quiz and Advent Fair had not taken place.

  • However despite these efforts, concerns were expressed that the Planned Giving scheme does not meet the cost of running the church week by week.

  • Churches Together reported that prayer meetings would take place during the week of Prayer for Christian Unity at different churches. The United Service would take place on the 20 January 2008. It was hoped that a Service of Reconciliation and Healing would be held near St Luke’s Day, 18 October.

  • The annual Christian Care children’s party will take place at the end of January for children who are from families in less fortunate circumstances; about 200 will be contacted. Donations and gifts, especially for boys for this worthy cause can be given to Patricia Hutchinson.

  • There would be no Parish Carol Singing this year. A retiring collection would be taken on the 16 December for Crisis at Christmas.

  • Following the recent Breakfast Discussion Meeting the PCC felt that it would be beneficial to run similar events three or four times a year to cover a range of topics

  • The PCC had pleasure in commending Ian Aldridge as a Lay Assistant.

Full minutes of the meeting will be found in the Bell Tower after the next meeting is on Thursday 17 January 2008.
