The Merton Nelson
Concert
Saturday 20 July 2002

This month's Magazine Homepage

The Concert launches The Nelson Tour 2002, a series of events in England and Wales which mark the bicentenary of the journey made by Nelson and the Hamilton's to Milford Haven in 1802. The whole programme is being co-ordinated by the Official Nelson Commemorations Committee.

The format for the concert includes a "Glyndeboume style" picnic on the Glebe Field, accompanied by sea shanty singers, a Sea Cadet parade, costumed actors playing Nelson and Lady Hamilton, the concert of maritime music in St Mary's, refreshments in the Church Hall and a fireworks display on the Glebe Field as finale.

The programme of the 76-minute concert includes recently discovered songs by Emma Hamilton which we shall premier on the evening. We are privileged to have a selection of well known artists to perform them, in particular the internationally recognised Michael George (bass baritone), Gordon Pullin (tenor) and Julie Kennard (Soprano). Richard Baker, the broadcaster is also very much involved and will present some of the music.

Everybody is providing their services at a reduced rate, such is their enthusiasm for the evening, and we are confident we shall be able to sell all 325 tickets to create a surplus. This will be split between St Mary the Virgin, King George's Fund for Sailors and The 1805 Club.
