As the choir prepare to
sing a week's services at Exeter Cathedral I consider what a spiritual
experience we are about to undertake. Living in community with one another,
eating, drinking and talking all adds to the splendid ancient tradition of
singing the daily office in an amazing setting.
There are summer
Christian camps available where the sense of community is encouraged and
explored. These camps are full of Praise Parties and other activities.
However we will worship in the Cathedral together in the "beauty of
Holiness".
One of the highlights
for me will be singing the Psalms for the day. Filled with their vivid
poetic imagery. quite possibly "the most precious heritage which Christians
have received from the Jews".
As well as the
fantastic music we will have fun, on our day off we will visit the coast and
have some "Chill out time" Other activities include quizzes and sport.
The trebles will be
having a daily general musicianship class either with me or Rufos Frowde
(Assistant Organist at the Chapel Royal) who has kindly agreed to be our
accompanist for the week.
The men will be having
a daily beer tasting festival and I am looking forward to furthering my
knowledge into what makes a great pint!
The new Academic year
involves many changes at St. Mary's, not least from within the Choir. A
pilot choral scholarship scheme comes into force and we welcome Margaret and
Francis our Choral scholars.
Margaret has already
shown her skill as a musician in the Parish Players production "Little Shop
of Horrors" and starts a music PGCE in September.
Francis, an
accomplished musician will take desk two. Both will assist me with
recruitment and discipline and musical education of the younger trebles. It
will be invaluable to have their support and experience on the top row.
