Thoughts on becoming
a churchwarden
by Barbara Clayton

This month's Magazine Homepage

On being approached, some time ago, my first thought was – me?, then why not x,y or z, all much more suitable than I. The only advantage I could think of that I had over x,y or z was possibly that I had time. (mind you – now that I’ve been in the job for only a fortnight I don’t think that even that advantage is correct).

To the parishioners a churchwarden is that person who takes part in processions and festal services holding a stave, sits at the back on a cushioned seat (a rather tatty cushioned seat) and hopefully takes care of any disturbance. The stave by the way is for removing stray dogs.

After reluctantly saying yes I’d do it, thinking at last I can honourably give up doing the odds and ends of jobs I’d been doing since the year dot, I am then told of the committee meetings, PCC meetings, staff meetings, Richard Thornton Trust meetings etc etc, I see that I will need all the time I’ve got, though I will have to remember I’d better devote a little time to house and home. My long-suffering husband has already been told that roast dinners on Sundays are out.

But, joking apart, the swearing in at a gathering with the Archdeacon Nick Baines was an uplifting experience and I hope that I will fulfil his expectations. I know many of you and hopefully I’ll get to know many more. I shall be around – hovering at the back of the church after services should you have any queries or need information etc. I don’t live very far away either, so if you want to come along for a chat you’ll always be welcome. I shall endeavour to serve you all to the best of my ability.
