Tom's June Letter

Summer Sunshine
Hopefully June is going to be a month of summer sunshine. May it shine on the Jubilee picnic in the Glebe and also on the Summer Fayre on Saturday 22nd June. I hope to see many of you there on these occasions. Many plants and flowers are flowering earlier than ever, for example our Wisteria was over by the beginning of May when normally it hasn’t come into flower until May arrives.

Music Review
We recently had a music review on a Saturday in May This took place in the church and was attended by over 40 people It proved to be a worthwhile occasion and those who attended had the following questions to tackle:-

  • What has been your most positive experience of music at St Mary's?

  • What do you consider to be the musical resources of St. Mary's?

  • Does the existing pattern of worship reflect contemporary lifestyles and missionary needs?

  • Does the Anglican musical tradition engage all age groups in our society?

  • If money was available what additional musical resources should there be?

At its July meeting the PCC will consider the responses to these questions. We will inform our readers of the outcome of this debate.

Fairer Shares
During July representatives of the parish have to meet with other parishes’ representatives to discuss our 'Fairer Shares' contribution for next year. Thank you to all of you who responded to our income survey. In total we had 116 responses

Missionary Giving
On the 11th May we had a concert in church by the Christian Dutch male voice choir which raised £650 towards our missionary giving. It was a lovely evening in many ways and our Dutch friends gave of their time and money to our cause. This means that so far in 2002 we have raised about £2000 towards missionary giving. This matter was raised at the APCM and will be discussed by the PCC at its May meeting. Our target is to raise another £4000 by the end of the year. Any fund raising ideas would be welcome. We have been taught that in serving others we are serving Our Lord who served us. Let us accept this challenge boldly and come up with enjoyable and creative ways to raise this money.
