It features a tall cross, incorporating a figure of Christ in Majesty and is
inscribed “Lift Up Your Hearts” and “In Memory of the Men of Merton who gave
their lives in the War 1914-1918”.
The
words ‘And In the War 1939-45’ were later added as a remembrance to those
lost in the Second World War.
Burke
Downing was considered a significant local architect in the arts and craft
style and the statue is a good example of his work at its most severe.
The monument is described by The Architect magazine as “Not only a
telling memorial to the local men who gave their lives, but a statue that
has exceptional grouping with the listed church of St Mary”.
Other
work by Burke Downing can also be seen throughout Merton. These include
Singlegate School in Christchurch Road, Colliers Wood, and St Barnabas'
Church and church hall in Gorringe Park Avenue in Mitcham. These buildings
are also included on the statutory list.
