John Hillier's June letter

As I write Tom our vicar is having a short break in Bruges returning to chair our May PCC.  This will be the first meeting of the new PCC following their election at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting in April.  A brief summary of the PCC meeting will appear in the July edition of the magazine.

On the subject of elections we offer our congratulations to two members of our congregation who were successful in the local government elections, Councillors Krysia Williams and David Simpson.

June promises to be a colourful month starting with Pentecost on June 4th when there will be a procession leaving the church at 2.45 to meet at the bandstand in John Innes Park for an ecumenical service to be attended by the local churches within the Churches Together in Merton Park group.  Last year was a successful and joyful occasion when we were especially blessed by good weather.  If the weather is inclement however we shall meet in St Mary’s.  If you are able to join us in the park please bring a chair if you would like to sit down and some light refreshments.

Trinity Sunday will follow of course and then we shall have our Church Fair on 17th June in the Glebe fields. There will still be time to offer help to Alan Hay who is managing this great event which is not only a good fund raiser for the church but also a time for meeting local residents who are not members of the church.  It has always offered opportunities for outreach and above all is a fun day for the whole community.

June has its share of Festival days; St Barnabas on 11th June; The Birth of John the Baptist on 24th June and St Peter and St Paul on 29th June.

In June we begin to look forward to holidays and a time of refreshment, we are also aware of those who are less fortunate who cannot take holidays for financial or family reasons.  Christian Care is able to offer summer holiday breaks for families who would otherwise find it difficult to take such breaks and if you are able to help in any way either with transport or financially please speak to one of the church wardens who will be able to put you in contact with a member of the Christian Care Committee.

May I take this opportunity to thank all who provide time and energy in the support of church activities?  Many of those who help go unnoticed but without their support the life and spirit of the church would be greatly diminished.  If you feel moved to join the team to help in any way please speak to Tom or me or the Churchwardens.
