The
Annual Parish Church Meeting will take place this year on Sunday April 2,
when among other matters, church officers for the year ahead will be
appointed. On this occasion, once again St Mary’s will be seeking to
appoint a second church warden, to work alongside Anne Carroll, as my term
of office comes to an end.
It is a privilege to undertake this senior role within the Parish Council.
It takes a commitment of time and a willingness to undertake responsibility,
but being a church warden is a very worthwhile experience. There are two
church wardens, and together we share duties and work within the support of
the whole staff team of St Mary’s.
During my three years as warden, I have gained a broad understanding of
church life, both within the boundaries of the parish and beyond. In the
first place there is regular involvement with assisting in the smooth
running of Sunday services. There is the opportunity to get to know in
detail the seasons and festivals of the church in its yearly cycle. I have
also learned a lot about the fabric of the church building.
An important part of our work is meeting and greeting people as they arrive
at services and ensuring that newcomers feel welcome and comfortable at St
Mary’s. Making new friendships with people in all areas of parish life is
very enjoyable.
Wardens are involved in developing initiatives and making decisions in many
other areas of Parish life. Having an understanding of the overall finances
of our church and being involved with money management on a weekly basis is
also a regular part of the job.
No previous experience is needed to become a church warden, other than a
real interest in the workings of St Mary’s and a willingness to serve.
There is help and support in all aspects of the role as you learn. So if you
are at all interested in thinking about undertaking this role, please
contact Anne Carroll in the first place (8544 1725).
