Graham
Sutherland the renowned designer of the huge tapestry Christ in Glory
for Coventry Cathedral, was born in Streatham, the eldest of three children,
and in his childhood moved to Merton Park. We do not know a great deal
about his childhood except that he went as a day boy to Epsom College for
two years. In 1919 he was sent as an engineering apprentice to the Midland
Railway but after a further two years he went to Goldsmiths' College of Art.
