It seemed very appropriate for Merton Historical
Society to hold their monthly
meeting in St. Mary's on the 5`h
October. The occasion was the annual Evelyn Jowett
Memorial Lecture. Evelyn Jowett was a
well-known librarian, local historian and
author. She was a regular worshipper at
St. Mary's for many years.
St. Mary's has been called 'Nelson's Church
' and the subject of the lecture this year
was 'An Appreciation of Vice-Admiral Horatio viscount Nelson,
Duke of Bronte'.
About 100 of us present were taken through the
life of Nelson by means of
commentary and slide, starting with pictures of his birthplace in Norfolk,
through
to
the West Indies, his campaigns and his Naples connections, not forgetting
slides
of
Emma and pictures of Merton. We had slides of artists impressions of Victory
and of
the subsequent funeral.
One of the slides that I found remarkable was that of an oil
painting of Nelson done at the age of 20. He must have shown a fine quality
of
leadership even then for an oil painting of him to be considered.
Pat and Ray Kilsby from Sanderstead, who are involved in the WEA there, gave
the
presentation, Pat ably supplying a commentary to the succession of slides.
They said that their son was to be
thanked for the excellent choice of slides.
He had a mania for Nelson Memorabilia
and had assembled them over some time.
It was an interesting evening and many thanks to the Historical Society for
organising
it.
