Winding slowly
o'er the Glebe
by David Cowie

This month's Magazine Homepage
We just about got it right in the Glebe Fields this year. For the third season we allowed the churchyard (eastern fields) to remain uncut, except for paths around the perimeter & across by the chestnut trees. It all looked a splendid sight in June, with numerous wild flowers, including ox-eye daisies, cranesbill, campions, clovers, vetches, buttercups, & this year three common spotted orchids.

Merton Council’s Environment department came to our aid this year & mowed the fields in late July, also removing the cut hay. The trusty ride-on-mower has been used to good effect, & the fields are looking in good shape for the autumn. We will continue the policy of allowing the greater part of the eastern fields to remain uncut, so as to increase the numbers of wild flowers & grasses, & then to mow after the flowers & grasses have seeded.

I will lead groups of volunteers on three Saturday mornings (9.30am start) November 10th, 24th & December 8th, to clear away any brambles, & to remove sapling ‘weed’ trees from the coppice to encourage better growth of plants & shrubs. Please come along if you can, with gardening gloves (brambles & nettles!) & any scythes, machetes, shears & rakes you may have. Coffee & biscuits will be served at half time! Ring me on 020 8543 1695 for details.
