The very hot
summer has seen our garden plants wither and water restrictions imposed.
The World Trade talks in Geneva have failed and the war in the Middle East
intensifies as I write this newsletter. Against this background the
church’s seasons take place. August has also seen us saying farewell
through death to one of St. Mary’s most faithful members Jean Neighbour.
Patronal Festival
This is when we celebrate the birthday of our church and this year it occurs
on Sunday September 10th which a celebratory Eucharist at 9-30
a.m.
Harvest Festival
This year we celebrate Harvest on Sunday 24th September with an
‘All Age’ Eucharist at
10.00 a.m.
This year we will be concentrating our thoughts on the poor people in the
world and the effect of failing harvests and trade agreements. There will
be a Harvest Supper on Saturday 30th September.
Dedication Festival
Revd Wilma Roest will be our preacher at our ‘All Age’ 10.00 a.m. on Sunday
1st October. Many of you will remember when Wilma was the Curate
at St Mary's. Wilma has also recently been appointed the Vicar of St Mary’s
Balham.
John Hillier
John has announced to the congregation and the parish that he and his wife
Audrey will be moving to
St
Albans
during the Autumn. John through his ministry has made a huge contribution
to the life of this community. As soon as we know further details of when
John is leaving details of a farewell will be made public and we shall
publicise our farewell to John and Audrey.
Jean Neighbour
As you all know by now, Jean died suddenly after being taken ill whilst
shopping in Kingston. A private funeral and a Thanksgiving service for Jean
were held at the beginning of August. Canon Graham Derriman, who gave a
tribute to Jean at the Thanksgiving Service, has agreed for that tribute to
be published in this edition of the magazine. We shall miss her greatly.
May she rest in peace.
Your
priest and friend
Tom
Leary
